What was the inspiration for the story?

The book was inspired by an interest in prehistoric times and what it might be like living in a post-apocalyptic world where people had reverted to primitive ways of survival.

Meet Sophie, part inspiration for Maya’s dog Zephy. Like Zephy, her tail does orbit so fast it seems in jeopardy of flying right off, she is also very loyal. Unlike Zephy, as you can see, she loves the water. Sophie is a springer spaniel. A breeder told me they were called “springer” because they were bred to “spring” prey from the bush and long grass.
